Health Tips Women Ahead In Organ Donation Know Organ Donors And Transplant Percentage In India

Women’s in Organ Donation: The number of organ donors is continuously increasing in the country. It has increased by more than 50 percent in the last seven years only. Recently, Lalu Prasad Yadav’s daughter Rohini has donated one of her kidneys to him, after which the discussions about organ donation are in full swing. If you look at the statistics, women are much ahead of men in this. According to a data released by ORGAN India, people in India are coming forward regarding organ donation but Organ Transplant is also not lagging behind. For example, in the year 2014, there were 6,916 organ transplants in India, while in 2021, its number increased to 12,259. That is, an increase of around 7 percent was seen in it. Organ transplant includes kidney, liver, heart, lung, pancreas and small intestine transplant. At the same time, the number of organ donors in 2014 was 1,030, which reached 1,619 last year, that is, an increase of about 57% has been seen in it.

gap between demand and supply

Even though the number of organ donation and organ transplant is increasing, but even today there is a big difference between its demand and supply. Talking to a media house, Organ India Chairperson Anika Parashar gave this information. He told that even today in a country like India, lack of information, hesitation and superstition prevails regarding organ donation. Many cases have also come when a person pledges his organs, but the family refuses. Due to this, many types of problems also come to the fore.

the figures are shocking

According to government data available on the website of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), about 1.8 lakh people suffer from kidney failure every year in the country. In contrast, the total number of kidney transplants is only around 6,000. Every year about 2 lakh patients die due to liver failure or liver cancer. According to these figures, 25,000 to 30,000 liver transplants are needed every year, but only 1,500 liver transplants are done. At the same time, every year about 50,000 people suffer from heart failure, but the number of transplants is only 10 to 15 in a year.

women ahead in organ donation

Now if we talk about organ donation, then women are far ahead in this compared to men. According to the information given by Dr. Vivek Kute of the Institute of Kidney Disease Research Center, a research has shown that out of the last 12,625 transplants in the country, 72.5% of the recipients are men. On the other hand, if we look at the statistics of the last 20 years, then the number of women in living donors is 75-80 percent. While the number of men in the recipient is more. Dr. Parashar says that these figures show that even today women in India are given less importance than men. He has emphasized on increasing awareness across the country and co-ordination between authorities, police, medical fraternity and family.
